The issue:

If we look into the number of unsheltered stray animals loitering India's streets, there are 6.2 crore stray dogs and 91 lakh street cats in India, moreover, 77% of the population said that they see a stray dog at least once a week (according to www.indiatoday.in). Another report (by timesofindia.com) estimates that on an average, 5 animals die every day.

what made me want to solve this?

I have seen many social media posts showing the severity of how poorly animals are being treated. Many people don't understand that animals also suffer both mentally and physically. Treating animals equally and caring for them is equally important. There are many who treat animals unhumanley and only find commercial benefits from them and this is what made me want to make a step to change this, it encouraged me to become the voice for the voiceless and spread awareness about animal welfare

why worth solving it?

Estimately there are 35 million stray dogs in India. Most of them are abondend by their owners, they are not only physically but also mentally abused because of which they cause harm and distrust to others who are there to help also lack of basic facilities like shelter, first aid etc has lead to consequences like spread of Rabies, noise pollution, feces garbage and traffic accidents. Some of the reasons of this despair is uneducation about animals, many people in the world have no idea on how to treat animals properly, many regret after adopting pets because they dont know that there is a lot of love and care that has to be given when it comes to having pets, because of which they abandon them. Many just have a commercial motive and abandon them once they get their profit.

Target audience:

Our target audience are the ones who are not able to report injured animals because of all the responsibility and burden on their shoulders.

Scope of the project:

  • Spread awareness about animal welfare through campaigns, spreading the word among family and friends
  • raise awareness about animal welfare and animal cruelty through social media
  • educating people through posters and database

Solution:

We made a database- provided to you in the form of a QR code and a link in the poster, consists of the location, website, the animals treated, and most importantly, the phone numbers of NGOs, Vets, Ambulances, and hospitals we also made a template on how to report an injured animal if u come across one. Learned as well as educated others about the importance of animal welfare and animal cruelty and the need to make a change.

Steps taken:

Identified the issue Attended online workshops went to two in-person field visits Made a separate document consisting of all necessary information about various NGOs, vets, hospitals, and ambulance numbers in Delhi NCR

We then went on two in-person field visits, for the first one we went to SPCA hospital in Noida where we learned about the importance of rabies vaccination and birth control among animals The second day we went to a barnyard where we fed various animals like rabbits, ginny pigs, horses, donkeys, ducks, cows, etc. We got to know how some of the animals were abandoned, some of them brought up from testing centers, and rescued from various situations.

Later we had Zoom meetings where we distributed the work among each member of the team While working on the document, we contacted various NGO's and hospitals to collect information on what type of animals they treat

Impact:

  • Better understanding of how to report an injured animal
  • Easy access to all necessary information about various NGOs, vets, hospitals, and ambulance numbers in Delhi NCR
  • Spreading awareness about animal welfare through posters and videos

Obstacles:

There were times when I was travelling because of which it was difficult to participate in the group more I also faced issue while contacting the NGOs, vets, and hospitals as most of them wouldn't pick up the call

Future scope:

  • Promote it offline
  • Spread more awareness
  • Expand the database to other metropolitan cities
  • Conducting workshops
  • Creating a better social media presence

Conclusion:

With great gratitude, I am thankful for this extraordinary experience with Tribes for good. I learned to cooperate and work in a team together, manage my time better, and got a greater exposure to animal welfare and animal cruelty. The overall experience was positive, and everything I learned will be useful in my future career for sure.
